![]() Why did you then decide to write a nonfiction book? Zhang: You’ve said you first came across this story through These Shining Lives, a play about the dial painters, of which you ended up directing a production. The thing that got me was when Arthur Roeder, the president of the United States Radium Corporation, was on the stand, he was asked, “What was the first case that you knew of?” He says, “I don't remember the name.” Essentially, you've killed these people and you can't remember their name. I think they did think the girls were expendable and disposable. Was there a gender or class division at play? Zhang: But not everyone thought that radium was harmless, right? The dial painters were taught to lick their brushes, but the male lab technicians working for the very same company took precautions around radium. He writes about seeing her smock from work hanging up in the bedroom and and it gives him the feeling of “a ghost bouncing around on the wall.” It's haunting that they were later nicknamed the “ghost girls” because of what happened.Ĭharlotte Purcell, one of the painters, demonstrates the lip-pointing technique that they used to get the brushes to a fine point. In the book, I quote the husband of one of the girls who was a dial painter. Kate Moore: They were just entranced by it! It was luminous. You write about these women coming home from the factory, covered in radium and glowing in the dark. Sarah Zhang: Even a century later, reading about how radium glows in the dark sounds kind of magical. Our conversation, condensed and edited for clarity, is below. I spoke to Moore about her book and the legacy of the dial painters. ![]() ![]() A free ebook excerpt is available now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or Google Play, and the book comes out in the U.S. With their cautionary tales in mind, scientists on the Manhattan Project learned to protect themselves from radiation. Their lawsuits were key to reinforcing the U.S.’s nascent workplace safety standards. In the a new book titled The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women, Kate Moore tells the story of how these dial painters took on the radium companies that made them sick-as they were dying of radium poisoning. ![]() Their radium-filled bones were being bombarded with radiation from the inside. So all that radium the women licked off of their paintbrushes actually ended up in their bones, like calcium would have. The human body, it turns out, easily mistakes radium for calcium. Their jaw bones-brittle and degraded-broke at a light touch. Then years later, after they stopped working the factories, the women started getting mysteriously ill. These products didn’t actually all contain the expensive and precious element, but the evocation of radium gave them a healthful glow. You could buy radium water, radium face cream, radium toothpaste, and even Radium Brand Creamery Butter. Plus, radium was supposed to be good for you. They were even taught to paint tiny numbers on the dials by licking their paintbrushes to a fine point. The young women had no reason to worry about radium then. The paint got onto their hands, into their hair, and settled on their clothes. During World War I and the years thereafter, dozens of teenage girls and young women worked in radium-dial factories, painting glow-in-the-dark numbers onto watches and airplane instruments.

In my testing, it's not noticeable, but on a slow computer or internet connection it may be noticable. Note that MusicBrainz returns results in groups of no more than 100, so entering more than 100 will add to the time to process. Now you can define exactly how many albums to list in the results. Fixed the previous artificial limit on number of albums to return. Now that your music is organized for Plex, you need to copy the “Music” folder to your Plex server’s storage drive. Even if some tracks in your collection are missing information, such as tracklisting metadata, they may work just fine with the service. I should clarify that Plex automatically organizes and add metadata to your library. (You can use a tool like MusicBrainz Picard to speed up this process, or just right-click each track and edit its properties.) This metadata tells Plex which artist and album a song came from, plus its placement on an album. Add metadata to every song in your library.Name each track of an album, placing the track’s number ahead of its name. But don’t jumble the files together separate each album into its own folder. It just needs a reasonable amount of storage space and a stable internet connection, preferably over an Ethernet cable. You can turn any old computer into a Plex media server. What Do You Need for a Plex Server? Intel, NVIDIA That said, this feature works best with well-known songs, not bootlegs or obscure stuff. Plex can even use “audio fingerprinting” to help identify misnamed tracks, which is a big help if you have a massive, slightly-disorganized music library. Plus, Plex can tell you about upcoming concerts, and if you don’t mind critics, it can show you album reviews. It automatically applies cover art to albums, organizes artists with photos and bios, and evens show lyrics for music. Of course, Plex can also add a ton of data to your music collection. And unlike those “real” streaming services, it has built-in visualizers, deep EQ settings, loudness options, and fading controls. He made the same observation about the Texas rangeland that critics have made about forest management in the American West: the human tendency to suppress fire at first sight has created a buildup of dry tinder that makes any wildfire that manages to break out “bigger than they ought to be,” Kelton said. “A really hot fire brings out woody vegetation that deer, birds, and even goats and sheep like to eat,” Kelton said. “You have to have rain, but if it comes all at once, you lose all the topsoil.”īut if the rain falls gradually, the first land that will green up and spring back to life is that which was burned. “There are a lot of caveats to that,” Kelton added. cedar - and brushy undercover that compete with native grasses. He cited the destruction of nuisance species like prickly pear, mesquite and ashe juniper - a.k.a. Today, when conditions are right, many landowners intentionally burn their property because, as Steve Kelton noted, “it will improve things.” ![]() Indeed, for all its obvious negatives, fire was part of the life cycle of the arid western range long before humans settled the region and tried to tame the land, instinctively suppressing wildfires whenever possible. “Fire can be good for brush control, if it’s a good, hot fire these should be pretty effective in that regard,” he said in droll understatement, referring to the Wildcat fires that have raged over 159,000 acres north of San Angelo in the west central part of the state, threatening to engulf the towns of Robert Lee, Tennyson and Bronte. “Dad was always a firm believer that nothing was black and white, nothing was all good or all bad,” Steve Kelton said. What would the elder Kelton write about today’s news? That there is an upside - a silver lining. “I’d long since run out of new ways to say ‘dry,’” the father had told the son. ![]() Steve, who now edits Livestock Weekly, remembers clearly that his father considered the period of time spent covering the 1950s drought for the San Angelo newspaper the most traumatic in his life. But his son, Steve Kelton, is alive and well and living in San Angelo. If anyone knew about drought, wildfires and making a living from running livestock on the range west of the 98th meridian, it was Kelton. His finest work, The Time It Never Rained, published in 1973, focused on the historic seven-year drought of the 1950s as told through Charlie Flagg, the hard-headed, independent-minded protagonist. He was also the longtime associate editor of Livestock Weekly and the author of several dozen western novels. Kelton was the farm and ranch editor for the San Angelo Standard-Times from 1948 to 1963. It’s fair to ask, rhetorically: What would Elmer Kelton say?
